Czech Traces in Kazakhstan

The Masaryk International Cultural and Educational Center presents a travelling exhibition about little-known chapters of 20th-century Czech-Kazakh history. Curated by Erik Lukas, the material is divided into nine thematic sections presented on 23 panels.

The Masaryk International Cultural and Educational Centre presents the unique travelling exhibition „Czech Traces in Kazakhstan“, which comprehensively explores the shared Czech–Kazakh history on the territory of present-day Kazakhstan. Through nine thematic sections, the exhibition presents both well-known and lesser-known chapters of the historical relations between the two countries – from the activities of Czechoslovak legionnaires and settlers, through the period of Stalinist repression, to the present day.

The exhibition was created by Erik Lukas in cooperation with a team of historians and other experts from the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. It was prepared in collaboration with archives, museums and partner institutions from both countries. Its aim is to introduce the Czech public to lesser-known historical connections while presenting Kazakhstan as a country that shares far more common history with the Czech Republic than might be expected.

The exhibition is bilingual (Czech–English) and is supplemented by Russian and Kazakh language versions accessible via QR codes. It offers an insight into shared historical themes that connect the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan despite the considerable geographical distance between them. The exhibition consists of 23 roll-up panels, including one introductory panel measuring 200 × 200 cm, while the remaining panels measure 200 × 85 cm.

Visitors can explore unique archival photographs, historical documents, maps and other visual materials illustrating Czech historical traces in Kazakhstan through nine thematic sections.
